Dancing to monks’ tune
DANCERS take inspiration from pagan and animist rituals practised by Japanese monks as they prepare for a show to be staged in Dundee tonight.
YAMA, Japanese for mountain, is being staged by Scottish Dance Theatre and is a collaboration between choreographer Damien Jalet and American artist Jim Hodges.
The show examines the practices of the Yamabushi – Japanese ascetic monks in the region that was devastated by the 2011 tsunami and nuclear catastrophe.
The show, which has already toured Europe, will be performed at Dundee Rep Theatre at 8pm before heading for a festival of dance in Cannes.
