Danc­ing to monks’ tune

DANCERS take in­spi­ra­tion from pa­gan and an­i­mist rit­u­als prac­tised by Ja­panese monks as they pre­pare for a show to be staged in Dundee tonight.

YAMA, Ja­panese for moun­tain, is be­ing staged by Scot­tish Dance The­atre and is a col­lab­o­ra­tion be­tween chore­og­ra­pher Damien Jalet and Amer­i­can artist Jim Hodges.

The show ex­am­ines the prac­tices of the Yam­abushi – Ja­panese as­cetic monks in the re­gion that was dev­as­tated by the 2011 tsunami and nu­clear catas­tro­phe.

The show, which has al­ready toured Europe, will be per­formed at Dundee Rep The­atre at 8pm be­fore head­ing for a fes­ti­val of dance in Cannes.
