Woman, 90, killed af­ter she is hit by bin lorry as she crosses the street

A 90-YEAR-OLD woman has died af­ter be­ing struck by a bin lorry in Ed­in­burgh.

The pen­sioner was hit by the east­bound ve­hi­cle on Piers­field Ter­race, near North­field Broad­way, at about 11.30am yes­ter­day.

The pedes­trian suf­fered fa­tal in­juries and was pro­nounced dead at the scene, po­lice said.

Road polic­ing of­fi­cers and the other emer­gency ser­vices at­tended and the road was closed for around five hours to al­low in­ves­ti­ga­tions to be car­ried out at the scene.

Of­fi­cers are ap­peal­ing for wit­nesses to come for­ward and help with the in­quiry.

Sergeant Ross Drum­mond, of the force’s road polic­ing unit, said: “This col­li­sion has re­sulted in the death of a woman and our thoughts and con­do­lences are with her friends and fam­ily at this dif­fi­cult time.

“Our in­quiries into the full cir­cum­stances of the col­li­sion are con­tin­u­ing and I would ask any­one who may have wit­nessed it, and has not yet spo­ken to of­fi­cers, to come for­ward and as­sist in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

“Equally, any­one with any in­for­ma­tion rel­e­vant to the in­quiry is asked to con­tact us as soon as pos­si­ble.”
