What would you pay Lineker?
BETWEEN Cabinet resignations and the Trump visit, it must have seemed like a good week for the BBC to bury its pay figures.
But excellent multitaskers as the rest of the media are, they managed to give the numbers the coverage they deserved. It was a case of “no surprise surprise” to learn that the top 12 spots were occupied by white, middle-aged men, starting with Gary Lineker earning up to £1.7 million. The first woman to appear was Claudia Winkleman, who takes home up to £370,000.
How can it be right that someone who basically chats for a living earns more than a hospital consultant or a head teacher, more, even, than the PM or FM of a country?
The argument in favour of such salaries is that if the BBC did not pay them other broadcasters would. Really? Perhaps Auntie should test the theory by releasing the top five into the marketplace to see how quickly they are snapped up.
Make it like a reality/game show and film it. Call it Greedy Planet and get Sir David Attenborough to narrate. Trust me, you can bank on it being a hit.
