Golden Girls eye Queen’s honours
THE Great Britain women’s hockey squad look well-placed to be receiving honours in the Queen’s New Year list.
There has been a growing clamour for the Rio Golden Girls to be honoured ever since they became the first GB team to win Olympic gold since 1988.
“We are confident that all the Great Britain squad will be honoured in some way,” said a spokesperson from bookmakers William Hill who know about these things.
Kate Richardson-Walsh, the captain, has already received an MBE for her services to hockey. She is quoted at 5-1 to receive a damehood in the Queen’s honours.
Following Rio, Downing Street said there would be no cap on honours for Olympic medallists.
In 2004, the England Rugby Union squad received MBEs while the England cricket team won honours for the 2005 Ashes.
