Grove are beaten as Students take over
IN A busy weekend in the Scottish Women’s National League Division One, Edinburgh University moved back to the top of the table after defeating previous leaders Grove Menzieshill 4-1 on Sunday.
The students ended their opponents’ 100 per cent record in the process, although they still have a game in hand.
Grove’s Sarah Jamieson scored the only goal of the first half but Edinburgh hit back and equalised when Sarah Robertson fired a fierce reverse-stick effort into the roof of the net. The comeback was complete when Louis Campbell somehow squeezed a shot in from a narrow angle.
A penalty corner then led to Sam Judge’s shot being touched in by Amy Brodie before Zara Malseed added a fourth.
The students had previously beaten Dundee Wanderers 6-3 on Saturday – Brodie scoring twice, with Campbell, Malseed, Ali Eadie and Ellie Hutchinson also notching. Ruth Blaikie’s brace and a goal from Jess Ross replied.
Meanwhile, Grove helped themselves to 13-1 thrashing of relegated CALA Edinburgh with Jamieson claiming five goals and Linda Clement and Ali Bell both scoring twice.
Dundee bounced back with a 6-1 hammering of Watsonians on Sunday to go fifth thanks to goals from Amy Snelle, Rachel Osborne, Becky Ward, Charlotte Watson, Ross and Emily Dark.
Lexi Sabatelli netted the only goal as thirdplaced Milne Craig Westernedged out Western Wildcats, who in turn followed that up with a 3-0 victory at Erskine Stewart’s Melville on Sunday – Jen Eadie (2) and Heather Lang the scorers.
In the other two games on Saturday, Watsonians were 5-2 winners at Hillhead, while Bromac Kelburne defeated fellow strugglers Erskine 3-0.
