THIS TIME last year he did not have the strength to pick up a spoon, but today Hampstead veteran Joseph Newman has a big fight on his hands.
The 85-year-old, who suffers from a muscle-weakening disease, is leading a national campaign to raise money for elderly care.
Mr Newman, a resident of Jewish Care’s Kay Court in North London, was asked to lead the organisation’s campaign, which was initially a Chanukah appeal. Mr Newman tells People: “We are continuing the appeal to try and raise as much money as possible.
“I moved into the home a year ago and if there is one thing I have achieved whilst being here, it is trying to make the lives of others worthwhile.”
He adds: “My faith has been renewed and I am really enjoying all the Jewish customs — it is amazing how it all comes flooding back.”
