Student’s mezuzah ‘flushed down pan’
AN APPARENT antisemitic incident took place at Pembroke College, Oxford, last term when a mezuzah belonging to a Jewish student, who does not want to be identified, was flushed down a lavatory by three non-Jewish and allegedly drunk students.
Tom Howard, of the private Catholic college, St Benet’s Hall, is believed to be one of the students involved in the prank, but has refused to comment. But it is thought that St Benet’s Hall, a constituent college of Oxford University, has temporarily suspended him, pending further internal investigation this weekend.
The other two students, from Pembroke, are being dealt with by their college, but as yet no action has been taken because there is insufficient evidence.
A spokesman from the college said: “Pembroke College has a code of conduct to which all students, staff, fellows and lecturers are subject, in which is stated the aim to promote a fair and humane environment for all its members.
“The purpose is to ensure that all members of the college community respect each other’s personal feelings. This includes personal respect in regard to ethnicity and nationality, social background, gender, religious or philosophical matters, sexual matters, privacy and matters concerning health and disability.
“Any allegation of a breach of this code would be subject of internal investigation within the college, and would naturally be taken very seriously indeed.”
