Jews think Arabs ’dirty’
THREE-QUARTERS of Jewish Israeli high-school students think Arabs are violent, uneducated, uncultured and dirty, according to a study conducted by Haifa University. A third say they are afraid of Arabs. Meanwhile, almost twothirds (64 per cent) of Israeli-Arab high-school students, according to the study, think Jews are violent; 57 per cent say Jews are dirty; and 47 per cent say Jews are not smart.
Soviet activist MK dies
KNESSET MEMBER and Soviet Jewry activist Yuri Stern, 57, died on Tuesday from cancer. Moscow born, Mr Shtern became one of the founders and spokesperson of the Soviet Jewry Education and Information Centre after emigrating to Israel in the early 1980s. He was first elected to the Knesset in 1996 on the Yisrael B’Aliyah list and switched to the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu faction in 1999. From March 2001 to March 2002, he served as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. He continued to serve in and attend the present Knesset despite his terminal illness. Mr Shtern will be replaced in the Knesset by Efrat resident David Rotem, a former legal advisor to the Yesha settlement council.

COURT DISCUSSIONS over the future of Yisraeli, Israel’s first free daily newspaper, were postponed this week to allow the joint owners, British-born Shlomo Ben-Zvi, and Sheldon Adelson, reportedly the world’s richest Jew, to reach an agreement over ending their partnership. The court gave Mr Ben-Zvi and Mr Adelson until yesterday to make a deal.
