Jews think Arabs ’dirty’

THREE-QUAR­TERS of Jewish Is­raeli high-school stu­dents think Arabs are vi­o­lent, un­e­d­u­cated, un­cul­tured and dirty, ac­cord­ing to a study con­ducted by Haifa Univer­sity. A third say they are afraid of Arabs. Mean­while, al­most twothirds (64 per cent) of Is­raeli-Arab high-school stu­dents, ac­cord­ing to the study, think Jews are vi­o­lent; 57 per cent say Jews are dirty; and 47 per cent say Jews are not smart.

Soviet ac­tivist MK dies

KNES­SET MEM­BER and Soviet Jewry ac­tivist Yuri Stern, 57, died on Tues­day from can­cer. Moscow born, Mr Shtern be­came one of the founders and spokesper­son of the Soviet Jewry Ed­u­ca­tion and In­for­ma­tion Cen­tre af­ter em­i­grat­ing to Is­rael in the early 1980s. He was first elected to the Knes­set in 1996 on the Yis­rael B’Aliyah list and switched to the right-wing Yis­rael Beit­einu fac­tion in 1999. From March 2001 to March 2002, he served as a deputy min­is­ter in the Prime Min­is­ter’s Of­fice. He con­tin­ued to serve in and at­tend the present Knes­set de­spite his ter­mi­nal ill­ness. Mr Shtern will be re­placed in the Knes­set by Efrat res­i­dent David Rotem, a for­mer le­gal ad­vi­sor to the Ye­sha set­tle­ment coun­cil.

COURT DIS­CUS­SIONS over the fu­ture of Yis­raeli, Is­rael’s first free daily news­pa­per, were post­poned this week to al­low the joint own­ers, Bri­tish-born Shlomo Ben-Zvi, and Shel­don Adel­son, re­port­edly the world’s rich­est Jew, to reach an agree­ment over end­ing their part­ner­ship. The court gave Mr Ben-Zvi and Mr Adel­son un­til yes­ter­day to make a deal.
