BORN: In Cape Town, South Africa, in 1949. Came to the UK to study drama in 1968 and then set­tled AWARDS: Knighted in 2000. The Olivier Best Ac­tor Award (won twice); the Evening Stan­dard Best Ac­tor Award, the Evening Stan­dard Peter Sell­ers Film Award. In New York: the Drama Desk and Outer Crit­ics Cir­cle Awards for Best Solo Per­for­mance; in South Africa: the Fleur du Cap Award for Best Solo Per­for­mance ROLES: As an as­so­ci­ate artist of the Royal Shake­speare Com­pany, his roles have in­cluded Mac­beth and Richard III. At the Na­tional Theatre he played the ti­tle roles in Stan­ley, Ar­turo Ui, Ti­tus An­dron­i­cus, and Primo. Films and television in­clude Mrs Brown (in which he was Dis­raeli) and The His­tory Man WRIT­ING: In­cludes four nov­els: The In­door Boy, Mid­dle­post, Cheap Lives, The Feast; an au­to­bi­og­ra­phy, Be­side My­self; and the plays I.D. and Primo. He has pub­lished a book of his paint­ings and draw­ings, Char­ac­ters ART: Has had shows at the Na­tional Theatre and at the Bar­bican.
