ISI LEIBLER’S ill-informed and intemperate article (“Enough of weak leaders!”, JC, January 12) contains an attack on Antony Lerman. Taking certain remarks out of context, he gives a distorted impression of Lerman’s political views about Israel.
Leibler calls for “Anglo-Jewish leaders” to “act against” Lerman as director of the JPR. On what basis? He does not find fault with Lerman’s experience, ability or vision. Nor could he, since Lerman’s record is unimpeachable. He is respected, at home and abroad, for his exemplary devotion to Jewish causes. We reject the implication that his suitability should be determined by a “political test”.
There is an urgent need for an open discussion in the Jewish community about Israel’s future. This is impossible in a climate where anyone who does not “toe the line” is automatically vilified — as Lerman is by Leibler.
