The Jewish cemetery in St Martin on the south of Mauritius contains the graves of 135 Jewish refugees who were among 1,584 Jews deported to the island by the British after trying to enter Palestine in 1940. The were interned there from 1940 until 1945.

Mauritius has a Jewish community today of around 40, led by Owen Griffiths, an Australian-born Ashkenazi Jew and biologist who runs a crocodile farm on the island.

In 2000, the island held its first barmitzvah since Second World War.
