REDBRIDGE KEEPER Ben Rosenthal was the hero in a dramatic shootout as premier division side scraped into round three of the JC Cyril Anekstein Cup despite a spirited performance from their Division 5 opponents.

Rosenthal kept out efforts from Andy Sheena and Dan Silverman while FC Team skipper Richard Sternberg was denied by the woodwork with victory in sight. Joel Berg, Paul Black, Andrew Taylor and Daniel Howard registered for Redbridge.

Relieved Redbridge boss Trevor Moss told JC Sport: “It was drama right until the end and FC Team were fantastic throughout. Our goals were a bit fortunate but I must credit my boys for sticking in there.”

A dull first-half was almost lit up by Anthony Mendel’s header which drew a fine save from home keeper Jeremy Levy. The East Londoners were controlling proceedings but failed to turn their possession into goals and eventually paid the price on 57 minutes when Sternberg netted with a powerful effort which flew into the bottom corner.

The goal sparked Redbridge into life and they were back on terms moments later, Joel Berg tapping home Greg Bookman’s corner.

The underdogs refused to lie down and an upset seemed on the cards when player-boss Mitchell Young headed home Jon Breger’s corner with 13 minutes remaining.

The hosts had to withstand heavy pressure in the closing minutes and their resistance was finally broken, Bookman’s 90th minute curler forcing extra-time.

Both sides had chances to win it, Breger coming close for FC Team and Bookman for Redbridge before the visitors triumphed on penalties.

“The turning point came in the final minute of normal time when we lost our concentration and gave away the goal,” lamented Young.

“We were a kick away from going through, but I think we have shown that FC Team can compete at the highest level. It’s disappointing to lose on penalties but I believe we are destined

for bigger and better things.”
