SURVIVORS, RABBIS, schoolchildren and local dignitaries were at City Hall on Tuesday for the London Assembly’s HMD commemoration.

Auschwitz survivor Trude Levi gave an account of her experiences and there were readings by London Mayor Ken Livingstone and Reform Judaism chief executive Rabbi Tony Bayfield.

Former UN worker Helen Bamber described her first visit to Belsen concentration camp and prayers were conducted by Central Synagogue minister Rabbi Barry Marcus.

Mrs Levi, who lit a memorial candle, said: “The Holocaust is different from every other genocide, which are terrible but are internal struggles of one group against another. With us, they [the Nazis] wanted to destroy an entire people.”
