The Jewish Chronicle - - COMMENT & ANALYSIS -

I WAS SORRY to read that the Chief Rabbi’s Office did not allow Mike Davidson to use his Hebrew/Yiddish name Yayzel ( JC, December 22). There was a famous yeshiva in Byelorussia before the Second World War called Reb Yeyzl’s. One of my neighbours, the late Harry Wolfe, said that he was shy to tell people that he had studied there because they would assume he was learned (of course, he was). There is also an old Yiddish song that starts: “Yoshke, Yoshke, shpan dem lozhik”. The point is that Jesus was facetiously given these Yiddish names precisely because they were so common and down-to-earth. Charles Heller charlesheller@rogers.com
