Hendon squeeze through in cup
Redbridge Jewish Care A........................2 Hendon United A (AET)..........................4 EXTRA-TIME STRIKES from Josh Lipman and Paul Bentley secured Hendon United A’s place in the quarter-finals of the Peter Morrison Trophy at the expense of JC MSFL premier division rivals Redbridge.
A tentative opening brought few opportunities in a dull first-half. Things improved three minutes after the restart when poor Redbridge defending allowed Lipman to break the deadlock with a cool finish under home keeper Ben Rosenthal.
The premier division leaders looked to have sealed their place in round four when top-scorer Avidan Last tapped home Motti Korman’s corner.
But Redbridge refused to lie down and reduced the arrears on 72 minutes, Steve Gevertz turning in Andrew Taylor’s centre.
The hosts poured forward in search of an equaliser and were finally rewarded on 88 minutes, Jamie Moss getting on the end of Bookman’s free-kick to force extra-time.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men in extra-time, Gevertz receiving a second yellow for handball and Josh Bentley being dismissed for a similar offence having also been booked.
The sending off of Gevertz in the first period handed Hendon the initiative and it was no surprise when Lipman restored their lead from Last’s centre. Paul Bentley completed a hardfought victory with a 25-yard free-kick before his brother saw red in the closing minutes.
Hendon boss Jonathan Kestenbaum told JC Sport: “I thought we did well throughout the game, and even though we conceded late on, we remained determined and competed well in extra time. Credit must also go to Redbridge who also battled right until the very end.”
Redbridge boss Trevor Moss “felt we were the better side in extra-time but were not helped by a referee who in my opinion spoilt the match.”
