To free the three
This week, diaspora Jewry rallied for Israel’s kidnapped soldiers. In 70 cities across the globe — from the US to Ukraine, Holland and Uruguay — tens of thousands of people held demonstrations calling for the safe return of Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser. Noticeably absent from the list was the UK. The JC heard of just one event, a last-minute youth-group rally organised by the Zionist Federation. It is tempting to ask why those behind the global solidarity day apparently left out Anglo-Jewry. But it would be far more constructive for us to take the initiative, and find our own ways of helping these three young men. Perhaps a good first step would be to ask our mayors to emulate the Paris municipality, which last week inaugurated a display of the three soldiers’ pictures in a local park, raising public awareness. If the French can do it, so can we.
