BLAIR ON BROADWAY

Hen and Chickens London N1

TONY BLAIR has struck a deal for his Downing Street memoirs and is reportedly charging — though not necessarily getting — $250,000 per speech. Somehow it’s not stretching creditability too far to imagine the ex-Prime Minister stepping onto the stage in America the country where he is most loved. Iain Hollingshead’s (lyrics) and Timothy Muller’s (music) musical satirises Blair’s decade in power but is surprisingly fair-minded.

Hollingshead’s book seems inspired by a trawl through press cuttings, but in the title role Joshua Martin matches his subject in cheesy grins and charisma. And the songs, well staged in Jessica Dawes production, promise more from the writers. (Tel: 020 77042001)
