The Jewish Chronicle - - COMMENT&ANALYSIS -

The author of a letter which refers to me ( JC, September 28) talks of “the late” Elie Schalit. I have not reached the stage of “late”, although the Jewish God has, to date, given me no less than 86 years. The writer also describes me as a one-time Betar member. My family and I were the equivalent of general Zionists almost before the first Congress in Basle, and we were always Hagana, not Betar members. To clarify, Gen Yaacov Dori appointed me as the Western-Hemisphere Transport Chief, firstly for the Hagana and then, after independence, for the entire Israeli Defence and Civil Establishments. After the War of Independence, I proceeded to broaden Israeli entry into commercial shipping.
