No Liberal cash for 60th rally
THE JEWISH Leadership Council is looking for £350,000 to finance next June’s Salute to Israel parade in London to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday.
But already the Liberal movement has rejected a request to donate £25,000 towards the event.
JLC chief executive Jeremy Newmark said that so far around a third of the cost had been pledged towards the parade, organised jointly with the Board of Deputies.
Formal approaches for donations had already been made to the major Israel organisations, he explained. Other Israel-related and synagogue organisations would also be asked.
“We are hoping a significant element of the funds will come from commercial sponsorship,” he added.
A Liberal Judaism source said the movement had been spoken to by a JLC member, adding: “I believe she wasn’t supposed to approach us. She went off half-cock.” Although the movement would be “happy to publicise the event”, to encourage members to go and bear the cost if it decided to have a float, it felt that it would be inappropriate to contribute funds directly.
A Reform spokesman told the JC that the movement had also “been informally approached. We made it clear that we are totally committed to the rally, will promote it and help to mobilise our members in supporting it — but we assumed that the core funding would be provided by the main Israel organisations.”
