TENNIS ISRAEL’S leading doubles pairing of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram were this week in contention for reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious Masters Cup in Shanghai.

The duo gained entry into the endof-season classic competition — featuring the world’s top eight — at the last minute after injury forced top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan to withdraw.

They started with a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 victory over Paul Hanley (Australia) and Kevin Ullyett (Zimbabwe).

This was followed by a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Leander Paes (India) and Martin Damm (Czech Republic).

This left the Israelis needing a victory in their final gold group match against Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus), while they also needed Hanley and Ullyett to lose their last match in order to progress.

The final group match was scheduled to be played yesterday.
