Israel are relegated

The Jewish Chronicle - - SPORT -

A gutsy performance from Belmont & Edgware all-rounder Herschel Gutman was not enough to save Israel from relegation after they lost an ICC European Championship Division Two playoff against Croatia.

Hosting an ICC cricket match for the first time, Israel restricted Division Three champions Croatia to a modest 153 from their allotted 45 overs at Tel Aviv’s Hadar Yosf Athletics stadium. Ably supported by Sanjay Gupta (0-14) and Isaac Massil (2-27), Gutman took 2-25 from nine overs.

Israel’s reply got off to a disastrous start as the early departures of Shalom Ruven,DoviMyersandGuptasawthem wobble to 7-3. Massil (29) and Gutman (44) staged a recovery with South African born Gutman proving the bedrock of the innings. He departed in the 40th over, caught at mid-wicket, and though the tailenders put up a spirited fight, they fell six runs short, dismissed with four balls remaining.

Israel manager Stanley Perlman, said: “We bowled superbly, our fielding was good, but the batting was atrocious — it let us down dismally.”
