Extending the Tribe
REGIONAL RABBIS want the United Synagogue’s youth division, Tribe, to reach out to youngsters from outside London.
“It would benefit the United Synagogue by having a much larger clientele,” said Rabbi Daniel Levy, of the United Hebrew Congregation, Leeds, and the new chairman of the Rabbinical Council of the Provinces (RCP).
“Kids from very small provincial communities in particular, who may feel isolated, could be part of something bigger,” he said.
David Kaplan, Tribe’s managing director, who was invited to address 20 regional rabbis at an RCP meeting in Leeds last week, said: “We want Tribe to be a UK phenomenon but we have to understand that the United Synagogue has to be our core base.”
Although there were no plans to open Tribe clubs outside London, he added: “You could see a time where there will be more interaction between London and the regions.”
