The Jewish Chronicle - - JUDAISM -

IN his book We Have Reason to Believe, published in 1957, Rabbi Dr Louis Jacobs argued that the Torah was not dictated wordfor-word to Moses but evolved under divine inspiration over time.

CHIEF Rabbi Dr Israel Brodie retaliated by blocking Rabbi Jacobs’s appointment as principal of Jews’ College in 1961 and later his return to the New West United Synagogue.

IN 1964, Rabbi Jacobs founded the New London Synagogue, leading to the birth of the Masorti movement.
