ISRAELI POLITICAL PHILOSOPHER Shlomo Avineri is likely to be one of the stars of Jewish Book Week next February. Avineri will chair the key opening discussion on Israeli history, culture and politics to mark Israel’s 60th anniversary. He will also be speaking about Theodor Herzl and Isaiah Berlin at separate Book Week events. His impressive fluency can be sampled in a recent piece in the Israeli daily Ha’aretz on the Iranian polyglot writer Ramin Jahanbegloo, who has a new book out advancing ideas which form an articulate, elegant, secular Islamic corrective to the rantings of his native land’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
