Hoffman’s Hunger, by Leon de Winter (Toby Press, £9.99), is a surprisingly lively novel about a Spinoza-studying Dutch bulimic who finds himself appointed ambassador to the then Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. This is a man who could hardly be more beset by tragedy, being a Holocaust survivor whose twin daughters later died, one as a result of leukaemia, the other through suicide after a life wrecked by heroin.
