DEBBIE GREW up in Finchampstead, near Reading. She has a degree in events management from Leeds Metropolitan and runs her own events-production company, Qube Productions. Debbie is a former leader of Hanoar Hatzioni and chaired the local Hanoar Hatzioni group at Reading Hebrew Congregation. She also worked as events manager for the United Jewish Israel Appeal. Michael, who grew up in Higher Crumpsall, Manchester, has a degree in music from Liverpool and a post-graduate certificate in education. He teaches people to play musical instruments through Manchester Music Service, specialising in clarinet, saxophone and flute. A leader of the 401st Manchester (Jewish) Scout Troop, he was Regional Chair for UJS Lancashire Region in 2000. The couple are going to live in Manchester. How they met “We met in the last place either of us thought we would find that special someone — in a field outside Stratford-UponAvon in August 2004,” says Michael. “Debbie was living in London at the time with friends from Manchester who had grown up with me. The friends convinced her to spend a weekend camping over the August Bank Holiday weekend, where we were introduced. We got on really well and it all started from there.” The proposal “Michael proposed to me when we were on holiday in Israel,” Debbie says. “It was on the balcony of the David Citadel Hotel overlooking the Old City. He put the ring in the middle of a sushi platter — he knows that sushi is my favourite food — and then popped the question.” The wedding “We were married at the Reading Hebrew Congregation synagogue,” says Michael. “It is a beautiful, small, historic shul which was completely filled with our guests. That created a really warm, lovely atmosphere.” Debbie adds: “The reception took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marlow in a banqueting suite overlooking a beautiful lake. Later on in the celebrations we had fireworks over the lake, and Michael played along with the band on his clarinet and saxophone.” The honeymoon “Michael surprised me on the evening of our wedding with tickets for a fabulous trip to the Far East,” recalls Debbie. “He had booked Koh Samui in Thailand and Hong Kong Island. Neither of us had been to the Far East so this was a perfect destination.”
