Red-hot Summers saves Chigs

The Jewish Chronicle - - SPORT - BY CRAIG SILVER

JC MSFL A 73rd-minute strike from top-scorer Steve Summers saved the day for Chigwell as they rescued a point against title rivals London Maccabi Lions at a bitterly cold Rowley Lane.

Lions went into the match with a psychological edge having beaten the East Londoners 3-1 in the cup a fortnight ago. They made the perfect start as veteran Aviel Schwarz curled a superb 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

The lead lasted just two minutes though as Chigwell striker Ashley Rubin capitalised on a misunderstanding between Lions defenders Max Fieldgrass and Adam Myeroff to rifle home his second league goal of the season.

Lions came close to restoring the lead on the stroke of half time. Tony Gold’s wind-assisted corner was headed off the line by Craig Sandford.

The Lions came close again early in the second half. Dominic Cheniart’s cross found Myeroff who sliced over from close range.

Lions’ patience paid off on the hour mark when Michael Pearson was brought down in the box by Jon Raven. Ben Joseph coolly converted the spot kick to put last season’s double cup winners 2-1 up.

Chigwell did not give up and, after a key substitution which saw Danny Sugarman depart for Richard Slater, they were back on level terms. Slater caused havoc before earning a free kick for his side. Sam Rosenthal’s delivery found Summers who volleyed home to guarantee Chigwell left Rowley Lane with a well earned point.

Lions finished with 10 men after Cheniart was shown a straight red card after clashing with Adam Hakimi.

Lions’ joint-manager Eilon Kennet said: “Chigwell always give us a good game but I am a bit disappointed that we did not put the game to bed. At the end of the day if you do not convert chances you do not win games.”

Chigwell assistant-manager Danny Berg was happy with a point at the Lane: “It was a fair result. At 2-1 down we did well not to let our heads drop and kept on fighting against a very good side.” Lions A: Elvey, Myeroff, Spiro, Schwarz, Gold, Pearson, Cheniart, Joseph, Fieldgrass, Basger, Estiz.
