FOOTBALL IN BRIEF
CHELSEA BOSS Avram Grant has scotched reports that Israel defender Tal Ben Haim will join Newcastle United in the January transfer window. “Tal started the season well,” said Grant, “and then did not play so much but is now back in the first team. I think he has played as much as any defender at Chelsea this season. He knows that Chelsea have a large squad and a lot of rotation before he joined the club. He is an integral part of our squad.” JOE JACOBSON helped keep alive Bristol Rovers’ FA Cup dream by scoring a penalty in the shootout in Tuesday night’s first round replay win over Leyton Orient. LEICESTER CITY are believed to be preparing an offer for Maccabi Netanya midfielder Tamir Cohen, the son of former Liverpool star Avi Cohen. SAM SLOMA bagged a brace as Dagenham & Redbridge cruised into the quarter-finals of the Essex Senior Cup with a 3-0 victory over Brentwood Town. GOALS FROM Adam Stolerman (2) and Zak White came in vain as holders London Lions crashed out of the Herts Senior Centenary Cup at the first hurdle with a calamitous 5-3 defeat against Knebworth. BRADY MACCABI claimed a win and a draw from a double-header against Pinner Pumas. Two goals from Robbie Metzgher helped them come from behind to draw 22 in match one. Max Klass, Metzgher and Adam Botkai helped them win the second encounter 3-0. MAX DEMBINA and an own goal helped Brady Maccabi beat St. Albans Rangers 2-0 in the Watford Friendly League Under 10 Division.
