ONE THING NOT TO MISS THIS WEEK

JOSEPHINE BURTON COMMISSIONING ARTS EDITOR

The Jewish Chronicle - - ARTS&BOOKS -

The Barbican showcases the London premiere of Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears), the Grammy Awardwinning opera by Osvaldo Golijov, inspired by the life of Spanish playwright Lorca. One of the leading composers of our time, the Argentinianborn Golijov cites his influences as klezmer, chazanut, his mother’s piano lessons, his grandfather’s memories of folk songs from Eastern Europe and Astor Piazzolla’s tango. Unafraid to explore his own Jewish roots, his previous works include the chamber piece Yiddishbuk, and a Baftawinning composition for brass and shofar written for the BBC. Sunday, April 13 at the Barbican, London EC2. Tel: 020 7638 8891
