Danny Caro rightly lauds Avram Grant, Israeli manager of Chelsea Football Club ( JC, April 25), who last Shabbat beat the great Manchester United in a thriller highlighted by two goals from Michael Ballack, a German who says he wants to stay with the Israeli’s club for life. Chelsea under Grant have reached a Champions League semi and now have a stunning shot at the Premier League title.

I therefore suggest that the man who should be sacked is David Mellor, whose poisonous columns in the Evening Standard demanding Grant’s head have been emblazoned in that paper’s pages since Roman Abramovich appointed his “co-religionist” last year. As recently as last week, Mellor was referring to Grant as a Pagliacco (clown) and demanding his dismissal. The Evening Standard should seriously consider Mellor’s future.
