Geoffrey Alderman wants a Jewish state — but not a theocracy ( JC, April 25). I have every sympathy. Only trouble is, where do you draw the line? After all, Britain was once a Christian state. No longer, though, it would seem. So is Yom Kippur in Israel — a time when “non-kosher restaurants are closed, and that even the non-religious refrain from driving their cars” — proof enough that the Jewish state is under no threat? It probably is, at least for now. Then again, a Martian visiting the UK on Christmas Day would probably be amazed by this Christian land... Simon Platman simonplatman@hot
