Ge­of­frey Al­der­man writes in his obit­u­ary for William Frankel ( JC, April 25) that “he rightly de­clared” Louis Ja­cobs “to be ev­ery bit as Ortho­dox as Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz”. That state­ment could only be made in good faith by some­one who has read nei­ther the Hertz Chu­mash nor Ja­cobs’s We Have Rea­son To Be­lieve. Pro­fes­sor Al­der­man has read both.
