De­spite the halachah, Am­non Gold­berg jus­ti­fies the col­lec­tive pun­ish­ment of civil­ian pop­u­la­tions by say­ing that but for Bri­tish car­pet bomb­ing in WWII we would all be speak­ing Ger­man or dead ( Let­ters, May 16).

That is du­bi­ous, as Bri­tain and the USA would likely have de­feated Ger­many with­out the car­pet bomb­ing of Dres­den (now con­sid­ered by many, in­clud­ing my­self, to have con­sti­tuted a war crime).

More sig­nif­i­cantly, his ar­gu­ment of “ne­ces­sity” can be ap­plied to jus­tify ab­so­lutely any wartime atroc­ity from dum-dum bul­lets and nu­clear war­heads to poi­son gas and, in­deed, the sui­cide bomb­ing of civil­ians. Jonathan Samuel Hasle­mere Ave, Hen­don, Lon­don NW4
