CEMETERY DISGRACE

The Jewish Chronicle - - Comment & Analysis -

I heartily endorse the views of Susanna Clapham, who is concerned at the “abandonment and desecration” she found at Bancroft Road Cemetery in East London ( JC, October 3). In 2007, I was similarly distressed at the appalling state of the Nuevo Cemetery in the grounds of Queen Mary College. I raised my concerns with a number of Jewish organisations but failed to receive a satisfactory response. I welcome the Board of Deputies’ initiative and its suggestion of a company to take responsibility for restoration and upkeep. This will restore Jewish heritage sites and ameliorate the impression that the Jewish community has no respect for its heritage or its dead. Helen Vegoda Arley Hill, Bristol
