In response to Leila Levine’s criticism of Dame Vivien Duffield’s generosity, which she feels benefits only London Jewish communities ( Letters, October 9), I would point out that, in 2007, Dame Vivien established Sparks: The Clore Jewish Development Fund, specifically to support Jewish communities outside of London.

Communities as diverse as Leeds, Bristol and Glasgow have all benefited from Sparks awards. In 2009, the fund made 14 awards totalling over £94,000 to support innovative Jewish activity outside of London. This followed on from awards of £96,262 made in 2008 and £93,490 in 2007.
