JEWS IN THE FORCES

The Jewish Chronicle - - Comment&analysis -

I was heartened to read Mrs Barbara Brill’s letter ( JC October 16) regarding a prayer for our service personnel.

The Chief Rabbi wrote a special prayer for the safety of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces for Armed Forces Day which fell on a Shabbat in June. Many synagogues did read it out on that day but I suspect it hasn’t been used since.

The Armed Forces Jewish Community would welcome and support the prayer being introduced on a regular basis, as it is in the USA.

This prayer is posted on the Chief Rabbi’s website but I would be happy to make a copy available on request.

I would add that there is a significant number of Jewish personnel serving in all three services and in all theatres of operations. Regrettably, we receive little support from the wider Jewish community other than a small group of traditional benefactors. I am afraid that many of our appeals for support fall on deaf ears and often our letters remain unanswered.

Members of the public are invited to become Friends of Jewish Servicemen and Women. If you would like to find out how you can help, please email afjc@armymail.mod.uk or telephone me on 07717 717981.
