SIMPSON’S LINK

The Jewish Chronicle - - Comment & Analysis -

Although Anne Sebba profiles Aharon Solomons (ne Henry Simpson) in a more detailed way than has usually occurred, the “Jewish secret” is not at all new ( JC, August 19).

There have been numerous accounts of Ernest Simpson’s paternal Jewish background and his son’s curious conversion to Judaism. On July 28, 1972 the JC profiled Ernest Simpson and his Jewish connections; and on August 18, 1972, you published a letter from me giving more details. In November 1970 I read a paper to the Jewish Historical Society of England which included details of the Simpson family link. I also came across the Kerr-Smiley branch of the family. Though not Jewish, they wanted to help preserve memories of their ancestors. Ernest Simpson’s paternal grandmother was my collateral relative and a family in-joke from my childhood was that we were thus distantly related to royalty by divorce.
