ROGER BENNETT was this week coming to terms with the United States’ elimination from the World Cup after defeat to Belgium.

“The pain will never go away — but that’s the joy of football,” he said.

Mr Bennett, a 43-year-old journalist and filmmaker has found fame presenting the cult-hit Men in Blazers show with fellow Brit Michael Davies.

Together they have been helping Americans to fall in love with the World Cup

“Michael and I sensed when we met in 2010 that the plates were shifting beneath the American sporting landscape.

“Football will grow much bigger in the States. Americans now unashamedly love the game,” he said.

Men in Blazers was initially a satellite radio show in the US but was snapped up by broadcasting giant ESPN as part of its World Cup coverage.

Mr Bennett has amassed 141,000 Twitter followers and a new, global fan base, including a loyal YouTube following.

He said supporting the US national team and his own Premier League club side, Everton, was “a bit like being Jewish — moments of great highs and terrible lows.”
