As an an­i­mal-rights cam­paigner and Jew, it fills me with great shame and sad­ness to see a small sec­tion of our global com­mu­nity still prac­tis­ing Kap­parot us­ing live chick­ens.

Tza’ar Ba’alei Chayim pro­hibits caus­ing un­nec­es­sary suf­fer­ing to an­i­mals, yet the sac­ri­fice is awash with pain. Con­fin­ing live an­i­mals, of­ten de­prived for days of food and wa­ter, in crates stacked high be­fore be­ing swung and slit, un­doubt­edly causes our fel­low crea­tures dis­tress.
