In her diary item, Bridge is a sport that suits us ( JC, Oct 9), Charlotte Oliver bemoans the reluctance of Sport England to recognise bridge as a sport. After all, she argues, bridge is included in the European Maccabi Games and in the Maccabiah Games.

If she is affronted by the absence of bridge as an Olympic sport, may I draw her attention to the fact that Track and Field Athletics hasn’t featured in the European Maccabi Games since Lyon, 1963. This accounts for the rather dubious distinction that, at the age of 76, I remain European Maccabi sprint champion! Roger Bruck New Barnet, Herts, EN4
