A SYRIAN Jewish community leader living in America has condemned the Jewish Agency’s decision to refuse refuge to Jewish women who convert to Islam.

The rabbi, who wished to remain anonymous, said Daesh would kill the women if they found out they were born Jewish – regardless of whether they converted to marry Muslims. In the early days, it was not uncommon for Jewish women to marry officers in Syria to avoid suspicion. One 17-yearold married an officer in Assad’s army so her family could flee the country.

He said Jewish-born women in the region should be granted asylum in Israel. He said: “If Daesh find the women, and know they are born Jewish – what do you think they will do to Ethiopian IDF soldier them? The Sochnut have made a mistake.”

A JA spokesman argued that it was easier to bring Jews out of other Arab countries because of the lower levels of inter-marriage and conversion. He also said the JA was facilitating the immigration of 9,000 Ethiopians, whose Jewish identity has been questioned.
