Sir Ger­ald Kauf­man and I at­tended the same He­brew School in Leeds and I’m afraid I may be partly re­spon­si­ble, along with other fel­low pupils, for his ex­tra­or­di­nary de­vel­op­ment be­cause we bul­lied him. He was some­thing of a nerd and it was dif­fi­cult to make a friend of some­one who be­haved like one apart and, by our re­ac­tion, we ex­ac­er­bated this de­meanour. There was no doubt he was clever, and had a sense of hu­mour, and we ad­mired this. But what went wrong?
