MANCHESTER’S WHITEFIELD Hebrew Congregation has won a £7,000 prize for its Shabbat UK activities. The award came from European Jewish think-tank Hulya and the Conference of European Rabbis for “the most innovative, enriching and original green Shabbat olamit” across the continent. Fundraising events during the weekend included football and poker tournaments and the Whitefield Jewish Youth Centre staged its own challah bake for children.

Seattle-born Nissim Black also spent the Shabbat in the community, attending events and telling the story of how he went from rapper to Orthodox Jew.

Rabbi Jonathan Guttentag said the shul was “gratified” that congregants’ “creative and imaginative work has achieved deserved recognition”.
