Tel Aviv killer shot
NASHAT MELHEM, the 29-year-old Israeli Arab who shot and killed two men in a Tel Aviv bar on New Year’s Day and went on to murder a taxi driver, was gunned down after opening fire on security forces last Friday.
His death brought to an end a week-long manhunt, but questions about his motives, how he succeeded in evading capture and who helped him, remain open.
When he was tracked down, Melhem was hiding in a flat belonging to his family in the northern town of Arara. Local residents had tipped off police as to his whereabouts. Police believe that other locals had been helping him lie low. Eight relatives and friends are now under arrest, under suspicion of assisting the fugitive.
