Tel Aviv killer shot

NASHAT MEL­HEM, the 29-year-old Is­raeli Arab who shot and killed two men in a Tel Aviv bar on New Year’s Day and went on to mur­der a taxi driver, was gunned down af­ter open­ing fire on se­cu­rity forces last Fri­day.

His death brought to an end a week-long man­hunt, but ques­tions about his mo­tives, how he suc­ceeded in evad­ing cap­ture and who helped him, re­main open.

When he was tracked down, Mel­hem was hid­ing in a flat be­long­ing to his fam­ily in the north­ern town of Arara. Lo­cal res­i­dents had tipped off po­lice as to his where­abouts. Po­lice be­lieve that other lo­cals had been help­ing him lie low. Eight rel­a­tives and friends are now un­der ar­rest, un­der sus­pi­cion of as­sist­ing the fugi­tive.
