Goodman set­tles for sil­ver in 15km race

ATH­LET­ICS RICHARD Goodman won a sil­ver medal at the South­ern Area Cross County Cham­pi­onships at Par­lia­ment Hill.

Goodman of Shaftes­bury Bar­net Har­ri­ers led for al­most three quar­ters of the Se­nior Men’s 15km race but he was caught even­tu­ally by Andy Maud on the sec­ond lap and beaten to the line by six sec­onds in a race com­pleted by 1,000 run­ners.

Han­nah Viner of High­gate Har­ri­ers fin­ished 12th in the Se­nior Women’s race in 30:33.

David Stone over­came ill­ness to be the first Year 10 boy home in a com­bined Year 10 and 11 M race at the Mid­dle­sex Schools Cross Coun­try Cham- pi­o­nships. Stone, 15, was strug­gling with asthma and a chest in­fec­tion, but he ex­celled on the 6km course de­spite run­ning half the race with just one shoe.

Start­ing slowly, Stone com­pleted the first lap in fifth po­si­tion. He surged into third place and was chas­ing the lead­ing pack when his right run­ning shoe came off.

He con­tin­ued un­de­terred, de­spite a large part of the course be­ing run over gravel which caused ex­ten­sive pain and bruis­ing to his foot. Stone even­tu­ally fin­ished fifth over­all.

As the first Year 10 fin­isher Stone, who was run­ning for JFS, qual­i­fied for the English Schools’ Na­tional Cross Coun­try Cham­pi­onship at the Nor­folk Show­ground in Nor­wich next month.
