ATHLETICS RICHARD Goodman won a silver medal at the Southern Area Cross County Championships at Parliament Hill.

Goodman of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers led for almost three quarters of the Senior Men’s 15km race but he was caught eventually by Andy Maud on the second lap and beaten to the line by six seconds in a race completed by 1,000 runners.

Hannah Viner of Highgate Harriers finished 12th in the Senior Women’s race in 30:33.

David Stone overcame illness to be the first Year 10 boy home in a combined Year 10 and 11 M race at the Middlesex Schools Cross Country Cham- pionships. Stone, 15, was struggling with asthma and a chest infection, but he excelled on the 6km course despite running half the race with just one shoe.

Starting slowly, Stone completed the first lap in fifth position. He surged into third place and was chasing the leading pack when his right running shoe came off.

He continued undeterred, despite a large part of the course being run over gravel which caused extensive pain and bruising to his foot. Stone eventually finished fifth overall.

As the first Year 10 finisher Stone, who was running for JFS, qualified for the English Schools’ National Cross Country Championship at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich next month.
