Rothschild hails ‘miracle’ of Balfour letter
LORD ROTHSCHILD has described the Balfour Declaration, addressed to his great-uncle 100 years ago, as “one of themostextraordinarymomentsinthe history of the Jewish people”.
The peer, a member of the famous bankingfamily,describedthelandmark document, which expressed Britain’s support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine, as a “miracle” brought about by “an incredible piece of opportunism”.
Lord Rothschild made the remarks in an interview with Daniel Taub, the former Israeli ambassador to Britain, to mark the centenary of the Declaration, which was signed by Lord Balfour, the ForeignSecretary,inNovember1917,and sent to the second Baron Rothschild.
“You think how did this miracle happen? This is perhaps the greatest event in Jewish life for thousands of years, and it’s a miracle that it took place.”
