Herts Rabbi Birnbaum ( JC Feb 13) cited Rabbi Y. E. Henkin who re­pu­di­ated his anti-Zion­ism once Israel be­came a re­al­ity fear­ing that a lack of in­ter­na­tional sup­port for Israel would “en­dan­ger mil­lions of lives”. The sad fact is, since 1948, thou­sands of Jews have been killed or maimed as a di­rect re­sult of the con­flict sparked by Israel’s cre­ation. If it was Jewish lives alone that con­cerned Henkin, he should have boldly dis­cour­aged aliyah and urged Is­raeli Jews to em­i­grate. If Henkin felt that preser­va­tion of life su­per­seded Jewish state­hood as a core Jewish value, he should have pleaded in­ces­santly with
