Maccabi in touching distance of the leaders
FOOTBALL MANCHESTER Maccabi remain firmly in contention for the Cheshire and Manchester League title following a 3-0 success over South Manchester Sports.
Strikes from Louis Basso, Sam Van Gelder and an own goal kept Scott McGarvey’s men a point behind leaders Manchester Athletic and Park Villa.
Maccabi’s hopes of securing the double were boosted after they were handed home advantage for their County Cup semi-final against Crown FC.
Prestfield’s debut season in the MJSL looks set to end in disappointment.
Zac Marks’ men lie mid-table in what has been a creditable first year since being formed.
But their cup hopes appear in tatters after Leeds Maccabi put them to the sword in the Shonn Trophy quarterfinal.
The Yorkshiremen take a four-goal lead into next month’s second leg at home after doubles from Nick Vale Louis Hewson, Rafi Kaye and Adam Woolfstein eased them home 7-3.
Michael Donn, Jonny Franks and Marcus Buchanan replied for Prestfield. Player-manager Donn said: “We have given a decent account of ourselves this year. We are a new team and it was always going to be difficult to step up straight away.
“The team has been competitive but we have lacked the strength in depth. This was a prime example as we led 3-2 but collapsed in the last 20 minutes as we didn’t have any substitutes to freshen it up. That has been our downfall.”
Leeds boss Adam Kristall said: “We are playing well but we can’t let up now.”
