FOOT­BALL GUY Lu­zon in­sists he has a “won­der­ful chal­lenge” ahead of him af­ter be­ing ap­pointed man­ager of Mac­cabi Haifa.

Lu­zon, the for­mer boss of Charl­ton Ath­letic, has signed an 18-month af­ter re­plac­ing Rene Meu­len­steen.

He left Hapoel Tel Aviv last month af­ter the club went into ad­min­is­tra­tion and said: “This job is the sum­mit of my ca­reer so far”.

Re­flect­ing on his six-month ten­ure, Meu­len­steen, who was as­sis­tant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manch­ester United for five years, said: “My time in Israel has been a mar­vel­lous chap­ter, but I felt like I was sink­ing in quick­sand and the play­ers were not on my side.”
