A lit­er­ary gem is now avail­able from the es­teemed Pen­guin Clas­sics im­print in the shape of Franz Kafka’s The Bur­row, a col­lec­tion of “posthu­mously pub­lished short fic­tion” (£9.99). And “short” mostly is the word: some of the in­cluded sto­ries — all of which are trans­lated by Michael Hof­mann — are less than a page long. But all, from The Truth About San­cho Panza to the ti­tle tale, are in their way sub­stan­tial.
